The Win-Win Overview

The Win-Win Campaign – a program from Envirolution, EME Group and powered by MakeMeSustainable.com (MMS) – is comprised of two main components:
  1. A green entrepreneurship & energy consulting training program for young adults
  2. A small business energy and carbon efficiency campaign
The Win-Win will provide local young adults, ages 18 -24, the training to perform walk-through (ASHRAE level 1) energy audits for small commercial facilities. Once trained, the Community Energy Consultants (CECs) will engage small businesses in their communities, and help those businesses evaluate their energy consumption, costs and related green house gas (GHG) emissions.

Win-Win campaign addresses the need for:
  1. Green collar jobs training programs for youth.
  2. Effective marketing of small business energy efficiency assistance programs
  3. Easy-to-use tools to allow small businesses to better understand and benchmark their energy and GHG emissions performance
  4. Concrete, measurable, verifiable ways for consumers to gauge the greenness of a company.
The CECs will be organized in small teams and assigned to a geographically specific zone of approximately 30 sq blocks. The teams will then be responsible to reach out to all of the storefront (small) businesses in their respective zones to make them aware of the many (energy efficiency) incentive programs and low-cost energy solutions available to them. Leveraging our best-in-class online energy management software, CECs will be able to collect and catalog valuable (energy) data, perform sophisticated energy analyses, and create energy management profiles for the businesses they engage.

Through this program, interns will perform (a minimum of 5) walk-through energy audits, direct small business owners to applicable energy efficiency incentive programs, products and services, and (help) market the businesses' green efforts to the public. Local Small Business owners will greatly benefit from being shown ways to conserve energy and save money while building up positive green PR. Additional benefits for small businesses include:
  • Consolidating and streamlining all relevant energy efficiency incentive programs
  • Free usage of MMS' Resource Management System (RMS)
  • Assistance filling out required applications and other paperwork
  • Assistance creating an Energy Action Plans
  • Assistance identify additional manufacturer discounts and special promotions
  • Green business marketing materials
  • Provide a way to participate in a local community, youth and education program

Interns will receive extensive training (both) on broader issues related to environmental sustainability, entrepreneurship, and the NYC energy issues, as well as the technical aspects of performing energy audits. The training will consist of a Building Performance Institute (BPI)-approved building performance/ energy auditing training curriculum and detail specific aspects of building science and commonly effective energy conservation measures. Furthermore, participating interns will gain invaluable, real world, hands-on job training and establish concrete energy auditing and project management skills. Other benefits for the interns include:
  • Entrepreneurship and business development training
  • Opportunities to work with and shadow professional energy consultants
  • Networking and professional development opportunities
  • Energy management software training
  • Mentoring and career development opportunities
  • Sales and marketing training
The program is set up as a competition among the teams and individual interns to see which/who can audit the most businesses and reduce the greatest amount of energy consumption and GHG emissions. Small businesses will compete against each other to be the most energy and carbon efficient, as well as realize the largest energy and GHG reductions.

Win-Win will recognize the top performers in each of these categories at an awards ceremony, to be held in conjunction with a Green Business Summit, at the culmination of the program, on April 29th, 2009.

Small Business Resource Management System (RMS)

The RMS software is a smart wiki-style system, integrating MMS’ database of GHG protocol data, geographic identifiers, energy efficiency products, carbon reducing actions, and (proprietary) carbon & energy management tools, together with an auditor’s inputs into the software. The result is a dynamic, continuously evolving system through MMS’s own development and knowledgeable inputs from auditor users.

Benefits of the RMS include:
  • Enable businesses to effectively understand and reduce energy consumption, costs and related CO2
  • Connect businesses with local solutions & government subsidies
  • Track, quantify and publish results and successes to customer base
  • Tie in with larger business energy efficiency offerings and initiatives

The software is an integral component of Win-Win, allowing interactivity, data and appliance granularity, product and action suggestions, and green jobs training ubiquitously throughout the country.
